Okay but once this was people pretending to be my health insurance leaving me messages with a number a number I was supposed to give them before answering a survey or something, and googling the number turned up the scam before I did irreparable damage. It’s okay to make people leave a message. It’s okay to double check who’s called you. And if they appear to be a business, it’s better to call their listed online number than the one that called you just to be sure it isn’t a trick. And when in doubt, remember: companies that have your information won’t ask for your information, and they will mail anything important.
With telemarketers flooding landlines and cell phones alike you need to protect yourself.
In this day and age never answer unknown numbers. Let them leave a voicemail or text message instead. Too many fucking elaborate scams.
Being a “fucking adult” means I don’t have to answer the fucking phone if I don’t want to, whether I know who the person on the other end of the line is or not.
Anything you say to an unknown number can be used to impersonate you – I choose not to engage for simplicity and safety.
As such, I don’t answer any call unless the number is recognised by my contacts
list. I then Google the unrecognised number, and block if necessary. I recently
deleted 50 blocked entries in my contact list since a lot of them I’ve
had for years. Thankfully the number of spam calls hasn’t increased, but
I still check and block for sanity’s sake.
We haven’t had a phone attached to our landline for about five years now? The relief from not chasing a ringing phone every ten minutes was immediate and has lasted. (We of course have one, because you can’t always rely on cell signal in an emergency, it just isn’t plugged in.)
