- On or around 10 December 2017, many users on Tumblr started receiving direct messages from other users asking for bitcoin, which is a popular cryptocurrency. (More information on bitcoin can be found in the Wikipedia article on it here.)
- Soon after, many users made PSA-type posts about the scam.
- Although it is unclear at the moment how this scam started, it seems like a fair number of Tumblr users got their accounts hacked so that their accounts sent direct messages to other members about bitcoin.
- Aside from PSA posts, some users took to Tumblr to make memes about the spam messages about bitcoin.
- Although the memes do not take a specific format, many of them poke fun at the idea of asking for bitcoins from other Tumblr users.
- Another theme in this meme is the absurdity of running a scam that involves asking Tumblr users for bitcoin when many users do not understand how bitcoin works in the first place.
- For example, one meme (which is a crossover with
I don’t know X and at this point I’m too afraid to ask) states, “I DON’T UNDERSTAND bitcoin AND AT THIS POINT I’M TOO AFRAID TO ASK”.- Another popular post states, “if you get a message from me asking for bitcoin it’s fake because i have
no idea how bitcoin works and i will only ask you for cold hard cash”. (This post proved to be quite popular, garnering more than 50,000 notes.)- Click here to see examples of the requesting bitcoin meme.
